Fa-La-La-La-Lele is tomorrow!

Our planned annual Bookulele show got cancelled this year due to the city's sudden need to do utility work on our date, so Bookulele got moved to December and renamed and retooled, and is now Fa-la-la-la-lele.

Thursday, December 15, starting at 8 p.m., at Pinhook, in downtown Durham. Free.
Performers include the High Strung Uke Jam players, the Durham Ukulele Orchestra, and other guests. Bring your ukuleles with you, and bring your friends. We'll have some sing and play-along action, with loaner ukes and coaches on hand, as well as some give-aways.

There's always some confusion about whether we have uke jams on holidays. Can't promise we will on EVERY holiday, but we usually do. In fact, some of our most fun jams happen on holidays! Why should you pre-register? Read below.

Rev will be teaching us how to play the blues on ukulele. We'll learn common blues forms/styles and chord progressions, and some fun "licks" and ornaments. I'm extra excited about this topic because I've been wanting to add some blues to the uke jam repertoire. Playing blues offers lots of opportunity for improvised jamming and I think we could have a lot of fun in the jam with the blues. Rev is a dynamic teacher and performer, as some of you know already. This is going to be a fun time!

SO....
If you are planning to attend, please pre-register with High Strung. What are the benefits of pre-registering? You will help:

1. Lil' Rev: If he knows how many people are coming, he can plan the flow of his class and prepare his handouts accordingly.
2. You: If you are pre-registered, all you have to do at the start of the workshop is come in, find a seat, and get your uke out. No waiting around to sign in or pay at the door. (Even if you just sign up in advance, and then pay at the door, you will speed up the process quite a bit!)
3. High Strung: Workshop organizers love it when they have an idea in advance how many people are coming to workshops. For one thing, they then know if they have enough participants to cover their costs. For another, they can plan things like chair and music stand set-up.

UKE WORKSHOPS IN OCTOBER

October is "ukulele month" at High Strung, and for the next three Sundays there will be uke workshops at 2 p.m., starting with an introduction to uke class for complete beginners tomorrow, and capping off with Lil' Rev's workshop on October 31st. Intro to uke, Part I
Sunday, October 17th, 2-4 p.m.
This is the class for new ukulele players. Come join us if you've just started playing and want basic info about chords, how to read chord diagrams, how to play simple melodies, etc. Or send your friends who have been eyeing your ukulele jealously and claiming that they've "always wanted to play a musical instrument." Having your own uke helps, but is not required for this class!
Cost: $20

Intro to uke, Part II
Sunday, October 24th, 2-4 p.m.
This class is for anyone who came to the Part I class, or who has been playing just a little while and is familiar with the very basics of the uke, such as names of the strings, a few chords, and wants to learn a little more. We'll play more melodies, learn some strum rhythms, and have a good time!

Blues tunes and licks with Lil' Rev
Sunday, October 31st, 2-3:30 p.m.
Learn essential blues strums, patterns, licks and scales, as well as secrets to improvisation, Boogie, Woogie, Jug-Band Tunes, Hokum, Chicago Blues, Shuffles, Jazzy Blues Licks, Turnarounds and much more. Open to all levels. We will use tab, live demo and Q and A. Bring a recorder if you have one!

What should Lil' Rev teach?

I am happy to let you know that Lil' Rev will be returning to Durham for ukulele workshops on Halloween weekend. He will participate in the annual Bookulele show (which, rumor has it, will be at Pinhook this year) on Saturday, October 30th. (Stay tuned for more Bookulele details.) And he will present a workshop at High Strung on Sunday, October 31st. Those of you who came to his workshops last Spring will remember how fun he is as a teacher and performer, so put this on your calendars!

And.... I want to know what you want Lil' Rev to teach. Check out his current workshop topics here. My current preference is for the Blues Styles for Ukulele topic. And we've had another uke jam member vote for blues as well:

I woke up this morning with them and did not know what to play. I need this workshop.

I think learning to play blues would be really fun, and would add a lot of possibilities to uke jam. But I'm interested in hearing what you guys would like to learn . As it stands now, I think we'll just get one workshop, but there's a chance he'll agree to teach two if there's strong demand.

The workshop will be geared towards advanced beginner and beyond players, meaning there will be no absolute beginner workshop. So you have a couple of months to get comfortable with basic chords and basic strumming, which you can do by coming to uke jam (hint, hint!).

Beginner Uke workshops at High Strung

I am teaching a two-part beginner ukulele workshop at High Strung that starts tomorrow, Sunday, July 25th, and continues on Sunday, August 15th. Both parts are two hours each, from 2-4 p.m.

Part I will cover the very basics - names of strings, how to tune, beginner chords, like C, F, and G (and a few others), playing simple melodies and rhythms, and how to read chord charts and melody tabs. This workshop is geared towards people who've never played before, have just started playing and need some basic information, or people who've been playing a little while and want to make sure their basics are intact before they move on.

Part II will continue on the above topics, with some new rhythms, chords, and melodies introduced. Part I is a great preparation for part II, but anyone who knows 3 chords and has played the uke for at least a few weeks can join in too.

So, if you've been wanting some beginning instruction, come join us. Or send your friends who've been pining over your ukulele!

Loaner ukes will be available for the part I class.

16 year old Killian Mansfield (with whom Paul has played much ukulele up at Ashokan) who is battling a rare form of cancer has just put out an album with some amazing guest stars on it, including Levon Helm, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, John Sebastian and many more. There is a concerted effort underway to try to push this album all the way to number one on the Amazon music charts and to keep it there for as long as possible. All proceeds from this record go to Killian's foundation which supports integrated therapies for kids with cancer. BOULDER ACOUSTIC SOCIETY: Old School But Never Old

Yet another great event for uke players/lovers/listeners in the area:
Looking Glass Artists Collective in Salisbury, NC, presents a day of workshops and an evening performance by Boulder Acoustic Society on Wednesday, July 22nd.

If you haven't heard (of) this band, check out their web site or look them up on You Tube. They are returning to LGAC after playing there in the Spring and being asked back for another show and some workshops. They describe themselves as "old school but never old" and have a great mix of traditional sensibility, modern flair, creativity and musicianship. Note that their descriptive blurb on the home page of their web site does not mention ukulele (what?!?!), but 3 of the 4 band members play uke (and do so on stage) and have had special ukes made for them by luthier Mike DaSilva.

There's uke, jazz history, and fiddle workshops that are $5 each, if you register before Monday. After that, the price goes up to $10 each. Go to three and get into the evening show for free.

Ukulele Challenge benefits Ukuleles for Peace tonight!

With the generous help of High Strung Violins and Guitars of Durham, we challenged local musicians to break out of the confines of their normally gigantic instruments and have fun experimenting with the versatile, forgiving, beautiful, goofy, sad, bright, recession-proof, every person's instrument that is the UKULELE!

The result? LET'S GET SMALL!: A Ukulele Challenge and Benefit Concert! It'll be an 8 act line-up of fancy and not-so-fancy panted musicians from the area, each plying their trade to "The Tiny Art" at the Pinhook on Friday May15th, in what promises to be a hot damn grab bag of genres, original tunes, cover tunes, original cover tunes, and other noises. There will be ukes of all kinds, accompanying instruments of all flavors... (read more here)

All proceeds will benefit Ukuleles For Peace, a small non-profit children's ukulele orchestra based in Central Israel that brings together Arab Palestinian kids and Jewish kids, with the broader purpose of fostering a sense of connection and shared community between Jewish and Palestinian families in the region. We're asking for suggested donations at the door of $5 for this event, but anything you can give would be greatly appreciated.

It was great to see a lot of uke jam faces at the Jake Shimabukuro show on Thursday night. What a musician, huh?! I loved the comment by a young audience member when asked if she was going to learn to play like Jake: "Are you kidding? I can't even fake move my hands that fast!" I can't either, but still I'm more inspired than ever to play more and to find ways to bring out the beauty of my little ukulele.

To that end, come play with us at the uke jam tonight. Bring songs. Bring ideas! We can always look up songs on the ol' net and print them out.

Intro to Uke workshop this Sunday (tomorrow)!

I'll be teaching an introduction to ukulele playing workshop at High Strung tomorrow, Sunday, April 26th, 1 - 3 p.m. The cost is $20 for two hours. Get to know your ukulele and discover its potential through melodies, basic chord strumming, rhythm, and ensemble playing. The workshop is aimed at adults and will be useful whether you're a first time player or have recently started playing and want to work on your basics. There will be lots of time for practice and questions.

Please sign up in advance, if possible, through the High Strung web site. Or you can register at the door, starting at 12:30 on Sunday.

Future workshop plans include an advanced beginner workshop for adults, and an introductory workshop for kids.

Joel Eckhaus has been playing the ukulele for over twenty years. He studied with Roy Smeck (the Wizard of the Strings) and has performed with the Arm & Hammer String Band, the Blue Sky Serenaders, the New York Banjo Ensemble, the Howitzer Mandolin Orchestra, the Neverly Brothers, the Blue Sky Serenaders, the New England New Vaudeville Review and the Pinetones. He currently plays with the Fore River Jazz Band; a ukulele/tap dance duo, Ham & Legs; and his own group, Ukulele Eck and the Fabulous Lacklusters. Joel was a featured performer in the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum's Ukulele Masters Tour in 1998. As we head into the weekend, we're looking forward to Monday's uke jam with our special guest, Victoria Vox.

Please let us know if you plan to attend by adding a comment, emailing marilee88 at yahoo dot com, or registering with High Strung.

Here are some important details:

Workshop topics: Making cover songs original/your own, plus cool strumming patterns.
The workshop is geared towards players with at least basic uke skills (i.e., you know at least a few basic chords - contact me if you have questions about this). Brand new players, non-players or others who wish to observe and not actively participate in the workshop are also welcome to attend the whole evening for a reduced rate.
The cost is $10 for workshop participants, $5 for auditors/observers. Please contact me if cost is a problem for you. All proceeds will go directly to Victoria. Cash is much appreciated.
The evening will start at the usual uke jam time of 7 p.m. with open playing. In addition, we invite you to bring any songs you'd like to sing in a very informal "open mike," or songs you would like to teach the rest of the group. Or songs that, in the usual uke-jam style, you would like the group to just play.
Victoria will perform several of her songs for us starting around 7:45, and then teach a short workshop.
Please note: Though Victoria will not start until 7:45, we ask that participants arrive as close to 7 (or earlier) as possible so we can all be signed in and settled before the show starts.
At the end of the workshop, we will all play together. I expect the performance/workshop portion of the evening will go until 9 p.m., and we will stay until 9:30 for open playing.

Victoria Vox coming to jam March 16th!

Victoria Vox, a full time touring singer/songwriter whose ukulele figures prominently in her performances and recordings, is coming to the March 16th uke jam.

Victoria will perform a few of her songs and lead a short ukulele workshop, followed by open ukulele jam madness.

All of this will take place at High Strung during the usual Uke Jam time. We're asking attendees to contribute $10 for the show/workshop, all of which will go to Victoria.

This is a set of mostly classical and some other tunes written in tablature. We thought it might be fun to play some of them at the next jam. There's a nice arrangement of Aloha O'e in there too. That tune has a pretty simple chord progression, so maybe next time some people can play the tab and others can play chords.

We're always looking for new ideas for tunes and ways to make the jam fun for everyone. So if you have any ideas, please post them in the comments section, or email me (Marilee) directly.

Bringing Songs...

There was a question about the protocol for bringing songs to uke jam. Anybody at any time is encouraged to bring songs to uke jam. We love new songs. When you bring a new song,here are some things to think about:

1. Bring a dozen copies.

2. Make sure it's relatively clean. Hey, we've got kids here!

3. Make sure it's not as long as Alice's Restaurant

4. The song should have common chords in it. Ebm9#5/G is not a common chord. Songs in the key of C, F, or G are particularly good.

5. If it's not a song people know, be prepared to sing it so we can all learn the melody.

Just out of their boxes! Several models to choose from including the concert sized "Rock Ukes" which look like a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Telecaster (Awesome!). There was also an acoustic standard and a pineapple standard that have great projection and sound pretty sweet. In addition to these, a few Kanile'a ukes are now winging their way across the country to High Strung. These Hawaiian ukes are great players and look stunning. Let me throw my hat in the ring on this common debate for the ages and specifically target what seems to be the crux of your question, which to me revolves around your frustration of not being able to pick up things on the guitar as quickly as you like. I see between 65 and 75 students a week on a one-to-one basis, the majority being "baby boomers" in their 40s and 50s. Your "being humbled" is the most common thing I deal with from week to week with my adult age students. You're far from being alone, as I'm sure you're well aware of by reading similar threads from other adult students and players on this forum.

I become a psychologist and therapist as well as a guitar teacher each week, that's just the reality of the situation. Having said that, there's no question you can become passable and beyond at any point on the guitar, because I've seen it happen numerous times; re-read the posts by Leo, Dave and Brian which echo that point. Here's my approach in working with all my students, particularly students in their 40s and 50s.

PATIENCE: The only students that don't succeed at all in my five decades of guitar teaching are impatient learners. I call it the "magic wand" students. They want to learn everything in a month, with the expectations of just having it all happen magically with very little effort. These type of students have usually been to anywhere from two to seven other teachers and wonder what's wrong with these teachers, without taking an honest look in the mirror. They usually have short attention spans and want to learn five different styles right away. Occasionally I can turn this type of student around with some tough love, but often than not, their impatience sinks their ship, not only for guitar, but usually for most other life ventures as well. The patient student realizes the journey and always reaches their playing goals. That student accepts the time period involved and is content from beginning to end.

PERSEVERANCE: Keep at it at all costs;don't get lazy. Make yourself a practice schedule routine that's consistent and practical. Like physical exercisee, pace yourself, don't over-practice. You can only do so much physically in a reasonable amount of time allotment daily; also you burn out mentally and frustration sets in. Start your practice routine by playing a couple of tunes you can play in your sleep, then get down to work and devote the majority of your practice time to what you are WEAK at. End your regimen with a tune or two that you can play in your sleep to remind yourself that you're a player.

PERSPIRATION: I lean heavily towards the Ernest Hemingway philosophy: "Learning is 99% perspiration...1% inspiration." Just put in the hard work on a consistent basis, staying patient and persistent and good things will happen on a gradual basis. There's no substitute for the hard work and effort you need to apply. In the case of music, you've got to play with others at a certain point. Your learning curve will increase at a faster rate. If you're doing solo guitar stuff, then get out and do open mics, a gig or just play to loved ones in your respective households. It'll help you memorize material, increase your confidence and help your playing self esteem.

PSYCHE: Here's the big one! Most adult age students who are either starting or returning to playing guitar on a regular basis, psyche themselves out. As Mike pointed out: "you have to have the mindset of a kid." Absolute fact. The teenage students you are so blown away by have NO FEAR! They simply go for it, without worrying about making mistakes, clanking a string or what the theory involved is. No doubt, as has been pointed out, they have more time, more physical agility, they started younger, etc., but most adult students defeat themselves mentally before they start.

Here are some of the ongoing issues and how I address them:

"I should be farther along at this by now." it's a PHYSICAL process that simply takes time to develop with finger independence, eye and hand coordination, the synchronization of two hands, etc. Just remember, everyone you admire sounded just like you after playing the first three to six months. Put into perspective the number of years those players you admire have practiced and played beyond your current playing time allotment. Your intellect will help you down the road, but initially you're dealing with physical barriers.

"I suck." No you don't, that's just a way of saying you have crappy self esteem. Anyone on this forum can show anybody else something on the guitar and learn something.

"I have no rhythm" or "I play like a white guy." I cringe at these statements. Everybody has rhythm, you just have to work at it and then gain playing experience with others; sure, it can take a while, but it's there, whether you believe it or not.

"He's godlike" No, he or she is not! They're just great players that have worked their asses off to excel at what they have accomplished. All "godlike" players will be the first to tell you: Yeah, I know a lot and can play well, but the more I know, the more I realize how much I don't know. These tend to be the most humble players who realize how far they have gotten, but appreciate how many other musical tributaries are out there. They'll be the first to squirm about being called "godlike. " Right, you'll probably never reach those heights, but it should inspire you to woodshed and reach the next rung of your own musical journey.

"What's that buzz?" Don't worry about a small buzz. Keep playing. If you obsess on every little ambient sound, you'll never get through playing a piece. If there's major fretting problems, then stop and slow down to a reasonable playing speed.

"I've got to understand everything before I play." No you don't. Get the physical coordination down, play songs, have fun and worry about the theory down the road.

Overall, don't beat yourself up, don't think too much, don't be intimidated, don't worry what you hear someone else do. In time, you will have your small victories and maybe even a couple of 15 minutes of fame moments. Remember, you started late in the game, so keep in perspective the amount of time and gig experience lifetime players have had in comparison to you. Keep your chin up and set your own goals with confidence and enjoyment.
